Director of the GlobalArctic Program
Prof. Matthias Finger is a Professor of Management of Network Industries at EPFL since 2002. As of 2010 he also directs the Transport Area of the Florence School of Regulation at the European University Institute. He holds a PhD in Political Science from the University of Geneva and has been, before joining EPFL, an Assistant Professor at Syracuse University (New York), an Associate Professor at Columbia University (New York), a Professor of Management of Public Enterprises at the Swiss Federal Institute of Public Administration. He is also a member of the Swiss railways as well as the Swiss electricity regulatory authorities. His main research interest is on the liberalization, re-regulation, and governance of infrastructures in the transport, energy, and communications sectors. He is the editor in chief of the Journal Competition and Regulation in Network Industries.
Professor of Arctic PoliticsDr. Lassi Heininen is a Professor of Arctic Politics at the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Lapland, and Adjunct professor (Docent) of Northern Geopolitics at University of Oulu, Finland. He is also Visiting Professor at University of Akureyri, Iceland, and at Trent University, Canada; Director of International Summer School in Karelia at Petrozavodsk State University, Russia; Chairman of Northern Research Forum’s Steering Committee, and Leader of the UArctic-NRF Thematic Network on Geopolitics and Security Studies.
Prof. Heininen teaches and lectures regularly abroad and supervises PhD students from Finland and other Arctic countries. His research fields include IR, Geopolitics, Security Studies, Environmental Politics, Russian Studies, Northern and Arctic Studies, and Political History. He is the author of more than 200 scientific publications and the Editor of the Arctic Yearbook. His recent publications include “Northern Geopolitics: Actors, Interests and Processes in the Circumpolar Arctic” in: Polar Geopolitics: Knowledges, Resources and Legal Regimes (2014); “Arctic security – new challenges and global problems” in: The Yearbook of Polar Law 2013, Volume 5. (2013); “’Politicization’ of the Environment: Environmental Politics and Security in the Circumpolar North” in The Fast-Changing Arctic: Rethinking Arctic Security for a warmer World (2013); “Arctic Strategies and Policies – Inventory and Comparative Study” (2011); “Globalization and the Circumpolar North” (together with C. Southcott, 2010).
Prof. Heininen is actively involved in speaking at international scientific conferences, seminars and workshops, as well as at the gatherings implementing the interplay between science and politics. He was the Finnish Torchbearer of the Torch Relay to the North Pole for the Sochi Olympic Winter Games and the XI Paralympic Winter Games of 2014 in October 2013.
PhD in Political Science and Associate Research Fellow
Dr. Florian Vidal is PhD in Political Science and Associate Research Fellow at the Paris Interdisciplinary Energy Research Institute (University of Paris). In addition, he is Research Fellow for the Earth System Governance project.
Florian is External contractor and Adviser on Northern Europe and Russia. Previously, he served for the French cultural delegation in Russia (2008-2010). Between 2013 and 2017, he worked as a Senior Business Analyst for supporting strategic investments (transportation, energy and communication) both on Eastern Europe and Latin America markets.
He was originally awarded an M.A. in Contemporary History by the University of Toulouse, France and an M.A. in International Affairs by Sciences Po Bordeaux, France.
His research interests include Political Ecology; Mining Strategy and Energy Transition; Human civilization/Earth interactions as a conceptual tool.
